This will be the SECOND ANNUAL competition
to highlight the finest young sculptors in New Jersey sponsored by The Shore
Institute of the Contemporary Arts. We will be looking for those high school
students who excel in the three-dimensional arts -- those who demonstrate not only
technical achievement in the handling of their material but that essential
creativity which demonstrates the spirit of contemporary art today. From the
entries a group of the best sculptors from each grade will be selected to have their
work displayed in a special exhibition at the Shore Institute of the Contemporary
Arts from May 10 - 25, 2008. The reception on May 10th will be held simultaneously
with the kick-off for SCULPTOURE, SICA's urban sculpture park, and a day-long
festival called "SCULPT! a celebration of all things chiseled, shaped, and formed.
In other words, the finalists will have their work seen by hundreds (If not
thousands!) and have their exhibition in conjunction with exhibitions of some of the
finest sculptors in the nation!

205 Third Avenue
Long Branch, NJ
SICA is creating the second annual SCULPTOURE, SICA's urban sculpture park. Like last year, outdoor sculpture will be placed throughout the downtown area of the city of Long Branch, the promenade along the Atlantic Ocean, and in Pier Village. This year we hope to add locations in the "Uptown" and "West End" sections of the city. There will be over 60 highly visible outdoor locations for the installation of outdoor sculpture, such as parks and open spaces, sidewalks, boardwalks, and the sides of buildings for relief sculpture. The artists participating in this second annual event will be solicited nationwide to compete for the opportunity to have their work displayed in these scenic areas of Long Branch and viewed by hundreds of thousands of visitors. Maps showing the specific locations where these works are located will be available at SICA as well as many other locations. Information about the artists as well as information about the site sponsors of the park will also be available on our website.

We are seeking photographic images (Black and White or Color) of strange occurrences produced by the intrusion of the utility companies on us and our environment. Unseen Egypt, David H. Miller - Jan 4 - Feb 3rd

Gallery 14

Hopewell, NJ
Exhibit Opening January 4th, 6–9 pm
Meet the Photographers, January 6th, 1–4 pm

Gallery 14 in January presents a group exhibit of photographs by its members, Body Works, focusing on interpretations of this theme. In the Small Gallery we are showing member David Miller’s infrared photographs of Egypt, Unseen Egypt.

An opening reception will be held on January 4th, 2008 from 6pm. to 9pm. The show runs through February 3rd, 2008.

David Miller traveled to Egypt in 2007, using his infrared camera to photograph in black and white images an Egypt that we can not see with our own eyes. His camera is a digital model modified to see the infrared light that surrounds us with invisible auras, light we which we can not see but which the camera captures. Infrared light illuminates vegetation in a unique way, turning green grass and trees white, skies dark, while clouds are revealed in their wispy whites and objects of stone become softer and creamy with luminous shades of white and gray. Thus he recorded an Egypt that is unseen by the many tourists who throng to the popular places, an Egypt that is older and more mysterious than that trampled by the tourists.

In his work you will see a cubist riverside village accentuated by wispy white palm trees against dark skies; in Luxor there is the mysterious row of sphinxes slipping off into the distance with an ominous bird overhead. And the pyramids are indeed ancient and remote, illuminated by a mysterious light in a setting of radiant sand, or with a sharply outlined head of the famous Sphinx contrasting with the sharp lines and strong reflections of the great pyramid.

Inspired by David Roberts early 19th century drawings of the scenes of ancient Egypt before the sites were cleared of the drifting sands; these photographs convey the mystery and romance of an Egypt that is still there but unseen.
Body Works: A Group Show - Jan 5th - February 3rd

Meet the Photographers, January 6th, 1–4 pm

Gallery 14 in January presents a group exhibit of photographs by its members, Body Works, focusing on interpretations of this theme. In the Small Gallery we are showing member David Miller’s infrared photographs of Egypt, Unseen Egypt.

An opening reception will be held on January 4th, 2008 from 6pm. to 9pm. The show runs through February 3rd, 2008.
The members of Gallery 14 are presenting a group show of “body works”. Freely interpreting the theme each member has presented his or her own approach to this idea. Ed Greenblat for example is showing what might be termed a very classic interpretation in his black and white figure studies, of which we have featured “Dune” on our gallery postcard. His “Two Pears” is also firmly rooted in the tradition of figure studies.

In contrast, Tasha O’Neill has focused on animals, giving us whimsical look at them in close detail. Carl Geisler has put together a series of 4 color photographs which emphasize the interaction of people in a heated conversation while isolating only parts of those involved, the part transmitting the message of the whole.

Marty Schwartz presents a very open ended set of photographs. His “Do I know You” is a powerful close-up portrait that expresses surprise and delight, while his more ambiguous “Choose Your Metaphor” is consciously open to a multitude of interpretations, expressing a relationship without the actors being completely revealed.

These interpretations are in contrast to Frank Magalhaes’ disturbing images in “Nightmare”, reminiscent of the face on an Egyptian sarcophagus, or his equally surreal “Dream”, both of which are skillfully manipulated self-portraits.

This collection of images demonstrates the wide ranging abilities and imaginations of the photographers of Gallery 14, expressed in the context of a broad theme.
